St. Thomas Fish Fry
On Sunday, April 01, 2012, seven members of our club journeyed out to Lyssons Beach, St. Thomas to support the Kiwanis Club of St. Thomas Fish Fry.
 Members who braved the rough St. Thomas roads were LG Stan Dunwell, LGE Ralston Nunes, DLG Willie Reeson, 1st VP Charles Simms, Dir. Dudley Ball, Past Dir. Dudley May, and Pres. Mike McGibbon

April's Board of Directors Meeting
April's Board meeting was held on Monday, April 02 at the home of DP Patrick Anderson.

Club Meeting of April 03
This was our Easter meeting. Our guest speaker was Garnett Roper JP. PhD. Th. MA (T), MA (R) B Th.
Dr. Roper is the President of the Jamaica Theological Seminary. He is currently the Chairman of the Theological Commission of the Missionary Church in Jamaica, Chairman of the JUTC and of the Rural Electrification Programme and sits on the Board of the Transport Authority.

Presentation of certificate to Minister

On Wednesday, April 04, 2012 President Michael and 2nd Vice President Richard visited the office of Minister without Portfolio, Office of the Prime Minister, Natalie Neita Headley, MP, and presented her with a certificate of appreciation for her address to our club in February, 2012.

LG Stanley Dunwell visits KC Trafalgar

On Wednesday, April 04, 2012, LG Stan made his official visit to the Kiwanis Club of Trafalgar at their meeting place, the YMCA, Hope Road, Kingston.
LG Stan was accompanied on his visit by DLG Willie, PE Clive, PDir. Dudley May and President Michael.

Kiwanis One Day Planning Meeting


On Saturday, April 07, 2012, Division 23 East Lt. Governor Stan Dunwell called a meeting of club presidents in the Division or their representatives to a meeting to coordinate efforts for a joint clubs Division 23 East Kiwanis One Day Project. The project agreed on is the beautification and general improvement of the Hope area in which the McCam Institute, The National Childrens Home and The Lister Mair Gilbey School for the Deaf are located. The implementation date is Saturday, April 21 2012 starting at 7:30 a.m.

Specific tasks suggested were; a) improving the road surface leading into the area, b) planting trees, c) removing garbage, d) providing garbage containers, e) repairing a breach in the fence at The National Childrens home, f) providing education on waste management, and, g) painting a pedestrian crossing.

Another planning is planned for Saturday, April 14. Our club has been asked to assist with the tree planting.


Labour Day

Our club usually implements a Labour Day project. Labour Day will be May 23, 2012. Do you have any ideas for a good Labour Day project? 
Please share your suggestions with President Mike, 1st VP Charles or any member of the leadership team. We would love to have your assistance in both the planning and implementation of a successful Kiwanis Club of Kingston Labour Day Project.

Last Week's Events



Club Meeting, March 27, 2012
On Tuesday, March 27, 2012 our club celebrated its forty eighth anniversary at our regular meeting at the Wyndham Kingston Hotel. We did the traditional cutting of the birthday cake.
This was done by sitting president Michael McGibbon and Distinguished President Winston Clarke, surrounded by all the past presidents who were in attendance at the meeting.

The widows of four deceased past presidents who were specially invited to this meeting were presented with lovely potted orchids.

Mr. Joseph B.B. Cox, Managing Partner, Centre for Growth & Development was our guest speaker. He spoke about the possible implications of the white paper on tax reform which is to be tabled in Parliament at the same time that the estimates of expenditure for fiscal year 2012/13 will be presented. He explained what are some of these proposed tax changes, and how they could impact negatively on the Jamaican people.
Mr. Cox's presentation was very interesting and thought provoking. At the end ot it, it was suggested that he should be invited back to finish what he had started. More pictures of this event may be seen on the iwanis Club of Kingston's Facebook page

Second VP Richard rowe was presented with a Kiwanian of the Month plaque for the month of January 2012 by President Michael McGibbon for his work on the Bulletin cover.
We had interclub delegations from The Kiwanis Club of New Kingston and the Kiwanis Club of Eastern St. Andrew.

Key Club Debate Finals 2012

The finals of the Kiwanis club of Kingston sponsored Key Club Debate was held on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at the Kingsgate United Church Hall. The finals was contested between the The St. Hughs High School Key Club and the St. Andrew Technical High School Key Club.
The winners, St Hughs, took home the DP Winston Clarke trophy while the runners up, STATHS colleected the DLG Michael Henriques trophy.

The best debater of the finals was Dessi-Ann Yetman from St. Hughs High School Key Club, shown in picture to the right receiving her Best Debater trophy from Presidnet Michael McGibbon.


In the picture to the left, the second placed St. Andrew Technical High School Key Club debating team pose with DLG Michael Henriques trophy which they received from Lt. Governor, Division 23 East, Stanley Dunwell.


The club is grateful to the main sponsor for the expenses associated with the debate, McKay Securities Ltd.
The club thanks project chairman PE Clive Heslop for seeing this year's debate through to the finals, despite the challenges and obstacles. Thanks also to SLP Chairman DLG Willie Reeson for his unwavering support for all aspects of the SLP program, and to the judges, especially cheif judge, DP Stewart Spencer who continues to do an excellent job of summarizing the contests.

Division 23 East Builders Club Oratorical Competition

 At the Divisional Finals held on March 27, 2012 at the Hope United Church Hall, Sashell Nelson from Cockburn Gardens Primary School emerged winner and Kyesi Sharpe from Richmond Park Preparatory School was the first runner up in a very closely contested final. The finals was judged by DLG Gerthlyn Holman, PE Saundra Bailey (ESA) and Pres Sharon Williams (NK) with LGE Ralston Nunes as timekeeper.

Read Around the World


Our club implemented another Read Around the World project on Friday, March 30, 2012 at the Victory Molynes Basic School. Stories were read to the children, then the story books were given to the school to add to their book collection. In the picture to the right, President Michael McGibbon hands over the books read during the project to school principal Miss Elsa McKenzie.

Please do whatever you can to help your club "Open a child's mind to reading - all year long" by supporting the Read Around the World project. You may contribute money to buy books or buy the books yourself, or donate gently used infant books. Whenever you can, please come out to the projects and read to the children. They truly love to see and hear from us.

Week ending March 24, 2012

The previous blog post displayed pictures of Mr. Winston Watson, the guest speaker at the last meeting of our club, March 20, 2012. He addressed 'energy and it's pricing' This week we will look at taxes.
 A white paper on tax reform is to be tabled in Parliament at the same time that the estimates of expenditure for fiscal year 2012/13 are presented, Finance, Planning and the Public Service Dr. Peter Phillips announced yesterday. What are these proposed tax changes? Will they impact negatively on the Jamaican people?

Mr. Joseph B.B. Cox, Managing Partner, Centre for Growth & Development will address our Club's Luncheon Meeting on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at the Wyndham Kingston Hotel commencing at 12:30 p.m.
Mr. Cox holds a Bachelor of Science and a Masters Degree from the University of the West Indies, Mona.‪
It will also be Past Director Las Dixon's birthday anniversary. Let's hope he comes to that meeting so that we may sing "Happy Birthday" for him.
Finals of the Public Speaking Competition
Please note that the finals of the Divisional Public Speaking Competition will take place on Tuesday, March 27 at the Hope United Church Hall on Hope Road starting at 5.30pm. The winner will represent us at the EC&C District finals.
Read Around the World
On Friday, March 31, 2012 we will continue the Read Around the World project at the Victory Molynes Basic School. Please support RaW by donating cash to purchase infant books, gently used books or buy the books yourself and come read to the children. The books awill be then donated to the school's book collection so that the infants can enjoy them in the future.
Dues Payment, Urgent.
A list showing the members who have paid their dues was recently circulated by e-mail. A large percentage of our club members have not paid with almost half of the administrative year passed. The club is experiencing much difficulty paying its routine bills, and this is putting the Treasurer under undue pressure. If you have not done so as yet, please pay your dues now or as soon as possible.
Remember that failure of members to honor thier financial obligations to the club could result in termination of membership. We want to keep all our members, so please pay up if you have not yet done so.

Our next Board of Directors meeting will be held on Monday, April 02, 2012 starting at 6:30 p.m. at the home of DP Patrick Anderson, 4 Argyle Road, Townhouse #3, Evans Court Estate, Kingston 10. 
Bar-B-Fry
One of our major fund raisers the annual Bar-B-Fry will be held on Friday, May 25, 2012 at the 4H Club Headquarters, 95 Old Hope Road, Kingston 6, from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Catering will be by Patsy Lyn Caterers and the price of the tickets is $800.00 each. Please get your tickets from PP Victor, and all members of the Board of Directors. In addition to purchasing tickets for yourself, please sell as many tickets as you can so that this event will be the best one ever.

The Eliminate Project is Kiwanis International's global campaing to help eliminate maternal/neonatal tetanus from the face of the Earth. The fundraising campaign will raise US$110 million for the project.
Our club is required to raise fumds to support this endeavour. A blue suitably marked pail will be passed around requesting contributions. A fund raiser could also be done for this purpose.
